The beginning of the first professional gynecological society of the region dates back in 1911 when the first meeting was organized by the Organization for operative medicine in Belgrade (capital of Kingdom of Serbia). The society gathered, among others, doctors who had been practicing gynecology. This inaugurating meeting was followed by several others of the same form until 1934 when the first Congress of the Yugoslav surgical society was held in Belgrade (then the capital of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia). After the World War II gynecology section was officially segregated from surgical society and the first Scientific meeting of Gynecologists of Federal People Republic of Yugoslavia was organized in 1950. On the Third Congress in 1956 the Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Yugoslavia (UGOJ) was founded and Academician Prof. Sinisa Tasovac became its first president. From then on every four years the Association organized congresses which gathered gynecologists from the whole Yugoslavia. Following the breakup of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the formation of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992, UGOJ was reformed and certain discontinuity in the congress activity was inevitable, so the Congresses were held in 1996 and 2001 only. When Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was transformed into State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2002, the following year the Assembly of the UGOJ adopted new statute and new name – Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Serbia and Montenegro (UGOSCG). Besides organizing congresses and symposia, throughout decade of existence this Association issued journal entitled “Gynecology and Perinatology”. In 2008 the Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Republic of Srpska joined the UGOSCG and the final name was established – Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Serbia, Montenegro and Republic of Srpska (UGOSCGRS). Today, the Association is the largest regional organization of gynecology-obstetrics professionals from its member-societies from Serbia, Montenegro and Republic of Srpska. The Association is member of FIGO and represents gynecologists-obstetricians from this region in FIGO bodies and activities. The Association is aimed at the development of gynecology and obstetrics as profession, improvement of female and reproductive health and health education. Through its long existence the Association has been building bridges between gynecologists through becoming widely recognized and respected professional society. The Association is seated at the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Clinical Center of Serbia.
